Academy On-Ice Workout : Winter Session I & II
Saturdays Only
Our Academy On-Ice Workout is a great class for skaters who have passed Basic 4 through Freestyle 4. In the class, we build on the skills the skaters have already learned and introduce new combinations of those skills. Skaters are also introduced to stamina and endurance training. Adults have enjoyed this class just as much as the younger skaters. A variety of Academy Instructors will teach this class... so it's a great opportunity for new ideas to be introduced.

Skaters who wish to pursue advanced figure skating, hockey or speed skating all need to start in the same place... group lessons. Here, your skater can learn the basic skills of ice skating. Skaters are grouped according to age and ability, our professional instructors will teach them how to skate forward and backward, stop and turn. Skaters will learn correct posture and technique. The student to teacher ratio is kept low so that each skater gets the attention they need to advance through the levels and continue their training.

The Academy at the Figure Skating Club of Minneapolis is now using the USFS Basic Skills format! We are really excited about this transition and all that it will bring to our skaters. Skaters enrolled in Academy Lessons will receive membership with USFS, a yearly membership badge, a record book and much more! Skaters who had previously been enrolled in our ISI program will be able to transition to the new USFS program. Below is a cross-reference guide for transitioning skaters... all skaters will be evaluated on the first day of class to ensure the correct level of registration. Skaters interested in completing their ISI testing requirements are still able to: Pre-Alpha through Delta can be accomplished by speaking to the Academy Director, Debbie Tallen; Freestyle testing can be accomplished through a private instructor... see our Coaches Page for contact information.
Skaters who wish to learn more quickly or go on to competitive (or recreational) figure skating are encouraged to take lessons with a private instructor. Any of our Academy instructors can answer questions for you and many offer private lessons. See the full list of our professional staff on our Coaches Page, or you may register your skater for our "Intro to Private Lessons" Class offered on Saturdays, Winter Session I and II.

Tests must be passed in order. New skaters will be evaluated on the first day of class and moved up or down as needed. Skaters are able to test throughout a session of lessons, they are encouraged to progress at their own pace..
Skaters enrolled in the Academy Learn to Skate program may also register for our annual ice show held at the end of April each year. They are also encouraged to participate in the Summer Skate Competition or the many other Basic Skills Competitions in town. Many of our club skaters began skating in Academy and have moved on to participate in local competitions throughout the year and skate with one of our many Synchronized Skating teams.
If you have any questions regarding Academy, feel free to contact our Academy Director.
